2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this rise, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the trend in gaming seems particularly pronounced.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
