Heartbroken Hong Kong Residents Stunned as Major Blaze Ravages Apartment Buildings
"Approaching the scene, the warmth increases and you can feel it, with the fumes being very dense."
Young scholar a local student was among the many people gathered at the scene of a fatal fire that engulfed significant parts of the eight-building Wang Fuk Court in the city's northern district.
No fewer than 36 residents have perished in Wednesday's devastating blaze so far, with many still unaccounted for, suggesting that this count will probably increase.
"We're facing a disaster," Thomas commented about the blaze, mentioning that he had seen a body being removed from the scene.
More than a 1,000 additional people were forced to leave the development as the blaze spread, with many heading to emergency centers that have been established to shelter them.
The blaze is gradually being managed, but officials indicate they cannot determine when it will be entirely eliminated.
Flames could be observed issuing from individual homes as many onlookers observed in stillness.
"I feel devastated. We have so many neighbors and friends. I do not know what is happening anymore. See, all the units are just ablaze. I do not know what to accomplish. I pray the local administration can help us to find stability after this."
One female resident stated that her neighbors dwell inside the complex and she was staying to hear if they succeeded to get out.
Harry Cheung, who has lived in block two of the Wang Fuk Court for over four decades annums, mentioned hearing "an extremely loud sound" and seeing blaze erupt in a nearby block.
"I immediately went inside to pack up my things," the 66-year-old resident commented.
"I don't even know how I personally currently. I'm just thinking about where I'm going to rest tonight because I likely won't be able to go back home."
Even though the source of the inferno that overwhelmed the multiple high-rise buildings remains undetermined, the flames are suspected to have spread quickly through the bamboo scaffolding that surrounded the complexes, which were in the process of renovations.
Some individuals have expressed anger that such a significant blaze could have happened and questioned the reaction.
"When there's a brush fire, they will employ aircraft and release fire retardant, but why is there not any deployment and how can they allow further complexes burning?" questioned another inhabitant of Wang Fuk Court.
"This area is so proximate to the emergency response center and we assumed the fire could be put out quickly, but currently the blaze has expanded. I'm so discouraged," she added.
The resident noted that she had been given minimal direction from the authorities on where to seek support.
Several Tai Po residents had brought supplies to the affected individuals - including dozens of warm layers and warming devices.
Upon questioning about their sentiments regarding the fire, residents voiced that "the government is ineffective" and that they were "immensely devastated".
"We don't want to see any more fatalities," said one.
An older lady who lives in an apartment in the impacted blocks explained she was absent when the fire broke out but that she is anxious about her home because it is not insured.
"I'm profoundly troubled that I have nowhere to inhabit at present," she concluded.
