Keely Hodgkinson Wraps Up Season with Winning Performance at Athlos in NYC
Hodgkinson achieved her fastest time of one minute 54.61 seconds the previous season in London.
Keely Hodgkinson finished her 800m campaign with a triumph at the women-only Athlos event in New York on Friday night.
{The reigning Olympic champion, who earned bronze at the World Championships last month, dominated an impressive win in one minute 56.53 seconds in what was only her sixth race in a season affected by a muscle issue.
Compatriot and world silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell finished second again in one minute 58.33 seconds, while the athlete from St Vincent Shafiqua M. (1:58.57) claimed third.
"I haven't competed much this year so it was probably easier for me to compete and be motivated to perform," stated the 23-year-old.
"The environment at the event is incredible so it was extremely enjoyable."
The women-only meet packed the stadium in its second edition, introducing a party atmosphere to conventional athletics, with musical performances and special crowns replacing traditional winners' medals.
The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena Williams, who is wed to Athlos founder Alexis O., was on hand to award the winners with their crowns.
Last year's winners received sixty thousand dollars (£44,603) - among the biggest cash prizes in athletics.
The event also attracted some of the sport's biggest names, as the Kenyan three-time Olympic gold medallist and global record breaker Faith Kipyegon won the mile, crossing the finish line in four hours 17.78 minutes.
American Brittany B., the 200m bronze medallist from last year's Paris Olympics, secured the sprint double.
