Rare Scarlet Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies
A group of image specialists based in the island nation have recorded visual evidence of “red sprites”, counted as the most elusive atmospheric displays in the world, where bright red bursts appear in the atmosphere.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
The photographers had originally set out to shoot the galactic core over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on a specific autumn evening, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.
They thought they would be lucky to get good weather that after-dark period, but their shooting session became “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer commented.
While reviewing his photographs for a stellar landscape and found he had photographed red sprites,” the individual said. “It was unbelievable – it resulted in excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the night.”
Explaining Red Sprites
These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the mesosphere, produced by electrical storms. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that strikes downward to the ground, the phenomena propel upward towards the higher altitudes, creating appearances that resemble columns, carrots or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a red sprite was recorded – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization.
Momentary and Ethereal Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the unaided vision, but one photographer was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at a sprite when it happened – an ideal happenstance looking at the right part of the sky and I witnessed a momentary scarlet burst,” he explained.
Observing the phenomena was a aspiration for the artist, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It seems that you are observing something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to observe.”
Advanced and Innovative Mastery
Recording a red sprite requires a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and artistic vision, he said. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”
A different team member remarked it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his career. “I could see the Milky Way illuminating above the distant edge while these massive crimson strands of light moved above a electrical event far on the horizon,” he explained.
A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no other images showing red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.
“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are observing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
