Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain rulings from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
